ABSTRACTIn the past century, several extreme summer floods in Central Europe have been associated with so-called Vb cyclones. Vb cyclones that propagate northeastward from the Mediterranean Sea to Central Europe. In literature, the role of, e.g., the Mediterranean Sea SST in the amplification of Vb precipitation is controversially discussed. Using ERA-20C and ERA5 data with and without downscaling by a coupled regional climate model (COSMO-CLM/NEMO), this presentation will discuss (a) the impact of cyclone tracking on the results, (b) the interaction between air and sea in the Mediterranean on Vb control, and (c) whether we can apply information theory to study the impact of the Mediterranean compared to control by other seas and land sources.
