ABSTRACT | We provide an overview of the recent advancements on the assessment of the effects of climate variability on crop production in the Mediterranean region. We present two case studies of adaptation to climate change for maize, where we demonstrate the potential of seasonal forecasts in predicting yields, and for rice, where we show how the experience developed in Italy can be exported in other warming temperate regions. We introduce a new project turning climate-related information into added value for traditional MEDiterranean Grape, OLive and Durum wheat food systems (MED-GOLD). MED-GOLD will demonstrate the proof-of-concept for climate services in the agriculture sector by developing climate services for these three hallmarks of the Mediterranean food system. In particular, MED-GOLD will co-design prototype services and applications involving both suppliers and users in the three major traditional Mediterranean crop systems to demonstrate the benefit of data/information-driven responses to changes in the climate system. |
