ABSTRACTAgriculture is one of the most vulnerable economic sectors to climate change, since it directly depends on climatic factors such as temperature, solar radiation, and precipitation. The EU LIFE ADAPT2CLIMA (http://adapt2clima.eu/en/) project aims to facilitate the development of adaptation strategies for agriculture by deploying an innovative decision support tool. The ADAPT2CLIMA tool will make it possible to simulate the impacts of climate change on crop production and the effectiveness of selected adaptation options in decreasing vulnerability to climate change in three Mediterranean islands, namely Crete (Greece), Sicily (Italy), and Cyprus. The project is expected to contribute significantly to increasing climate resilience of agriculture areas in Sicily, Cyprus and Crete as well as at EU level by developing, implementing and demonstrating ADAPT2CLIMA decision support tool for adaptation planning in agriculture that estimates future climate change impacts on local water resources, as well as the climate change vulnerability of the studied crops’ (olives, vineyards, wheat, barley, tomatoes and potatoes) production in the project areas. The tool construction was closely monitored by the project steering committees comprising of climate and crop scientists, policy makers as well as farm association executives who were interacting to tailor make the final product perfectly suited to their needs. In particular, the tool provides: i) current climate and future climate projections for the areas under study for two different IPCC RCP scenarios; ii) water resources projections; iii) vulnerability indicators of selected crops relevant to crops’ phenology, physiology, production and quality; (iv) socio-economic indicators; (v) vulnerability and adaptation assessments for each crop together with an evaluation of the proposed adaptation options.
